The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, is the country's premier institution of agricultural education and research, and began as a small agricultural research station on 30 acres of land donated by Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilas Sannidhi, the Regent of Mysore, in 1899, and Dr. Lehmann, a German scientist, to start research on soil crop response with the laboratory of the Directorate of Agriculture. Later, under the initiative of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the Diwan of Mysore, the Mysore Agricultural Residential School was established in Hebbal in 1913, which offered a license in agriculture and later a diploma programme in agriculture in 1920.
