The DA & FW is organized into 28 Divisions and has five attached offices and twenty-one subordinate offices which are spread across the country for coordination with state level agencies and implementation of Central Sector Schemes in their respective fields. Further, one Public Sector Undertakings, nine autonomous bodies, ten national level cooperative organizations and two authorities are functioning under the administrative control of the Department.

KVK

The first KVK was established in 1974 at Puducherry. The number of KVKs has risen to 731. The KVK scheme is 100% financed by Govt. of India and the KVKs are sanctioned to Agricultural Universities, ICAR institutes, related Government Departments and Non Government Organizations (NGOs) working in Agriculture. KVK, is an integral part of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS), aims at assessment of location specific technology modules in agriculture and allied enterprises, through technology assessment, refinement and demonstrations. KVKs have been functioning as Knowledge and Resource Centre of agricultural technology supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy of the district and are linking the NARS with extension system and farmers

Department of agriculture

The history of the Department of agriculture in Kerala also depicts the agrarian history of the State. The Department of Agriculture started functioning in the erstwhile Travancore on 27th May 1908. Kerala Agricultural University

Kerala Agricultural University was trifurcated into Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) and Kerala Agricultural University (KAU).Now the University has eight colleges (four Agriculture, one Agricultural Engineering, one Forestry, one Co-operation Banking & Management, one Cimate Change and Environmental Sciences), six RARSs, seven KVKs, 15 Research Stations and 16 Research and Extension Units under the faculties of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Forestry. In addition, one Institute of Agricultural Technology offering Diploma in Agricultural Sciences respectively is also functioning in Kerala Agricultural University.

The College of Agriculture, Vellayani, established in May 1955, serves as a center for undergraduate and postgraduate education. Initially housed in a palace building belonging to the royal family of the former Travancore State, the college quickly grew to match the standards of leading agricultural institutions in India. Postgraduate programs for M.Sc. (Ag.) and Ph.D. degrees were introduced in 1962 and 1965, respectively. The simultaneous development of the college farm provided hands-on experience for B.Sc. College of Agriculture, Padannakkad

College of Agriculture, Padannakkad,Kasargod came into existence back in 1994. The college initially commenced its operations in the RARS, Pilicode campus as the 3rd agricultural college of KAU and was later shifted to Padannakkad in 1998.The genesis of the college was with the aim to instigate and steward agriculture education, research and extension services in Malabar region of Kerala, primarily focussing on the agricultural problems and prospects of the region. The erstwhile Coconut Farm (Nileswar III), Padannakkad, under the Department of Agriculture was transferred to the Kerala Agricultural University to initiate the founding of this College. An initial fund of Rs. 1.0 crore was raised by public subscription with much of the support coming from the 1994-95 Kerala Government budget. The current Padannakkad campus became functional in 1998, after the new building was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Sri. E.K. Nayanar.

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore,

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, is the country's premier institution of agricultural education and research, and began as a small agricultural research station on 30 acres of land donated by Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilas Sannidhi, the Regent of Mysore, in 1899, and Dr. Lehmann, a German scientist, to start research on soil crop response with the laboratory of the Directorate of Agriculture. Later, under the initiative of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the Diwan of Mysore, the Mysore Agricultural Residential School was established in Hebbal in 1913, which offered a license in agriculture and later a diploma programme in agriculture in 1920.

Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

The journey of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), popularly known as Pusa Institute, began in 1905 at Pusa (Bihar) with the generous grant of 30,000 pounds from an American philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps. The institute was then known as Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) which functioned with five departments, namely Agriculture, Cattle Breeding, Chemistry, Economic Botany and Mycology. Bacteriology unit was added in 1907. The name of ARI was changed to Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research in 1911 and, in 1919 it was renamed as Imperial Agricultural Research Institute. Following a devastating earth quake on 15th January 1934, the institute was shifted to Delhi on 29th July 1936. Post independence, the institute has been renamed as Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

The Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR)

The Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR), Lucknow was established in 1952 by the erstwhile Indian Central Sugarcane Committee for conducting researches on fundamental and applied aspects of sugarcane culture as well as to co-ordinate the research work done on this crop in different States of the country. The Government of India took over the Institute from the Indian Central Sugarcane Committee on 1st January, 1954. ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mitraniketan

ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mitraniketan is the Farm Science Centre of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for Thiruvananthapuram District and was established in 1979 at Mitraniketan to work for transferring agricultural and allied technologies to farmers, rural youth and extension functionaries of Thiruvananthapuram district. The KVK won 'Best KVK Award' instituted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research for the biennium 1998-2001 for the commendable service rendered to the farming community of Thiruvananthapuram district.

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU)

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) had its genesis from establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, as early as 1868 and it was later relocated at Coimbatore. In 1920 it was affiliated to Madras University. TNAU assumed full responsibilities of Agricultural Education and Research and supported the State Agricultural Department by delivering research products. Till 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, was the only Institute for Agricultural Education for the whole of South India. In 1958, it was recognized as a Post-graduate Centre leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees. The Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai was established in 1965. These two colleges formed the nucleus of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University while it was established in 1971.

Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU)

Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) was established under the name of Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU) on the 12th of June 1964 through the APAU Act 1963. ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute

The institute has contributed immensely for enhancement of livestock production through control of economically important diseases and eradication of some of them, most notably eradication of Rinderpest, CBPP, African horse sickness and Dourine. Important vaccines against economically important diseases include Rinderpest (GTV vaccine), Hemorrhagic Septicaemia, Anthrax, PPR, Sheeppox, Goatpox and Newcastle disease of poultry. Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur (MP) was established on 1st October, 1964, by the Government of Madhya Pradesh under Act 1964 (No. 15 of 1964). JNKVV is cent percent Government funded State Agricultural University, implementing government funded research projects for agricultural development in the State of Madhya Pradesh. With the assistance of the State Government established the biggest multi-campus university at Jabalpur, in the heart of India, named after the architect of modern India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru based on the recommendations of Radhakrishnan Commission (1949) on the concept of Establishment of Agricultural University. An approach was envisaged to narrowed down the gap between the experts and farmers through the Joint Indo-American Team on Agricultural Research and Education in 1954-55 and 1959-60 on the patterns of Land Grant Colleges of USA. Indian Institute of Horticultural Research

The Institute spread its sphere of Research activities to the length and breadth of the Nation by establishing its experimental stations at Lucknow, Nagpur, Ranchi, Godhra, Chettalli and Gonikopal. Over the years these experiment stations have grown in size and today they stand as independent institutes, however, retaining the Chettalli and Gonicoppal under its fold. As of now, the IIHR has its main research station at Hessaraghatta, Bengaluru with 263 ha of land and Regional experiment station at Bhuvaneshwar in Orissa with two Krishi Vigyan Kendras both located in Karnataka state at Gonikopal in Kodagu and Hirehalli in Tumkur districts. Apart from this, the Project Coordinating Cell of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Fruits is also located at the institute at Bengaluru.

ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR-NRC on Yak)

ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR-NRC on Yak) is a premier research institute proactively engaged in research and development of yak (Peophagus grunniens L.) and is the sole authority on research strategy formulation for sustainable development of yak husbandry in the country. The institute was established in 1989 at Dirang (1500 m above msl) in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The experimental yak farm of ICAR-NRC on Yak was set up in 1995 at Nyukmadung (2750 m above msl) which is located about 31 km from Dirang township at a diversion of Tezpur-Tawang highway.

The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, popularly known as the acronym 'TANUVAS', blossomed on 20.09.1989 as the first Veterinary University of the country, through the Tamil Nadu State Government Act 42 of 1989. The seed for the establishment and growth of TANUVAS was sown as early as 1876, when the Madras Veterinary College was started as an Agricultural School in Chennai to offer diploma and certificate course in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. The institute attained the status of a college on 01.10.1903, when it started functioning at Dobbin Hall, Chennai and admitted 20 students for a three-year diploma course called GMVC (Graduate of Madras Veterinary College). It was the only veterinary college in the erstwhile composite Madras State till mid 1950’s.

The Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM) Bangaluru established at the initiative of Plantation Industry in 1993 to provide professional management education in the field of plantation sector. The leading units from plantation & Agri-business industry, four Commodity Boards, namely Coffee Board, Rubber Board, Tea Board & Spices Board, , and Plantation Associations, viz. Indian Tea Association (ITA) & United Planters’ Association of Southern India (UPASI) are its founding partners. The ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) was established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1976 at Hyderabad. To fulfil these mandates, Academy organises various capacity building programmes for researchers, academicians, extension personnel, scholars, and other stakeholders in NARES. Considering the strategic importance of agricultural research in food security and economic growth of the country, leadership, governance and innovation are emerging as prerequisite for the transformation of NARES into a more pluralistic innovation system.

ICAR - Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute

ICAR - Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute is one of the research institutes established under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. ICAR is an autonomous organization under Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. ICAR Research Complex for Goa was established in April, 1976 as a regional centre under ICAR Research Complex for Northeast Hill region, Shillong, Meghalaya. Subsequently it became the regional centre, ICAR Research Complex for Goa, under CPCRI, Kasargod. Considering the importance of agriculture in Goa state, ICAR, New Delhi, upgraded the centre into an Independent Institute from April, 1989. Subsequently, this Institute has been upgraded from 1st April, 2014 as a ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute. This Institute is under the Natural Resource Management (NRM) division of ICAR.

Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehra Dun

Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehra Dun made a humble beginning as Forest School established in 1878. Initially named as Imperial Forest Research Institute, FRI came into being in 1906. Later renamed as Forest Research Institute and Colleges, with a number of centres located at different places all over the country administering research as well as training of Forest Officers and Forest Rangers. After reorganization of Forestry Research in the country and creation of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) in 1988, the training and research centres were given an independent status of institutes. Forest Research Institute, now one of the institutes under ICFRE, was conferred the status of Deemed University in December 1991 on the recommendations of the UGC, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

The Act came into effect on 26th January, 1993 with the issue of notification by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Govt. of India.
